The Role
Relman Colfax PLLC is seeking an experienced Controller. The successful candidate will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and will be responsible for all aspects of the firm’s accounting cycles, tax payments, and ensuring financial compliance and controls in the finance operations.
This role will be critical in providing strategic support to leadership by providing analysis and recommendations for key decisions to further the Firm’s mission. This includes high-level financial planning, developing and administering budgets, interpreting financial reports, developing pricing strategies and driving cost reduction initiatives.
LOCATION
Hybrid role based in our Washington D.C. office with remote work on two days per week.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
ESTIMATED STARTING SALARY RANGE:
Up to $130,000 - $150,000 annually, based on skills and experience.

Responsibilities
- Oversee all financial transactional activity and accounting cycles, including accounts payable, accounts receivables, cash management, billings, payroll, fixed assets, and monthly closings;
- Manage the general ledger, including the review of account variations and the completion of monthly bookings for each accounting cycle;
- Partner with the firm’s tax CPA firm to provide all necessary financial information in order to ensure that all Federal and State tax documents and registrations are filed on time;
- Ensure that all financial transactions and journal entries are recorded both timely and accurately in accordance with firm’s policies and GAAP;
- Authorize and transmit staff payroll, ensuring taxes, leave and benefits are properly reported;
- Approve payables for disbursement based on Accounts Payable Aging Schedule; Provide quality control of client billing by ensuring compliance with retainer agreements and/or client contracts; perform billing and submit via various E-Billing systems;
- Ensure accounts receivable schedule is analyzed and outstanding balances are collected;
- Maintain and reconcile Client Trust accounting;
- Review and approve monthly bank reconciliations for all accounts in a timely manner;
- Monitor and project cash flow;
- Partner with 401k Plan administration, ensuring accuracy of census and compliance with IRS regulations.
- Partner with the COO to develop and implement the firm’s Financial Policy and Procedure Manual to ensure proper internal controls and management of risk;
- Ensure the integrity and coordinate the management of all financial management systems;
- Coordinate the integration of all automated systems and the proper flow of data between systems;
- Train new hires including attorneys and paralegal staff on timekeeping and accounting policies;
- Assist with special projects.
Supervision
- Supervise the Accounting Assistant.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.
- CPA preferred.
- Five-seven (5-7) years of accounting experience, preferably in a law firm context.
- Ability to meet and prioritize multiple deadlines and work as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and Centerbase accounting software.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
